Three Americans were detained in Iran for crossing the Kurdistan border into Iran "without permission" on July 31, 2009. The group of three, two men and a woman, were hiking in the northern Iraq region when the crossed the border.
Officials from the Kurdish Regional Government stated that the group called a friend and said they had been surrounded by an armed man. 1
