Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard was killed in Afghanistan after his convey was hit by an RGP in August 2009. In the moments after his legs were severed in the bombing, an embedded Associated Press reporter, Julie Jacobson and AP cameraman Ken Teh chronicled his final moments. When Bernard's family was notified of the existence of the images, they asked the U.S. Marine Corps to help stop the AP from making the images public. Despite the objection of Bernard's family and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, the AP published the images of the dying marine on September 4, 2009, along with an article titled "Afghan War: Death of a Marine."
