In response to the disorderly conduct arrest of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, President Barack Obama commented that the Cambridge Police Department "acted stupidly" during a press conference on July 22, 2009. He also said he may be "a little bias" because Gates was a friend and he didn't have all of the facts.
Two days later, Obama said he did not mean give the impression "that I was maligning the Cambridge police department and Sergeant Crowley." He went on to say that both Gates and Crowley "probably overreacted."
